We are seeing a dramatic shift in practices brought about by state-of-the-art, web based lms software launched in the past year.
Traditional functions.
Learning management systems have been around for many years. The original technology dates back to the 1970s operating on large mainframe systems. Today many are network PC-based technologies, often open source. The problem is that many training managers and company executives think that open source means free. While there is no charge for the software, open source systems are the result of thousands of technically-oriented developers collaborating on a solution which often needs to be both installed and customized. If you don’t have available IT resources, don’t consider open-source. If you do have IT resources, or plan to hire them, figure out the cost of those resources per year when calculating the investment in the LMS. In many cases, you may find that the total actual cost of web-based learning offered as ‘’software as a service” fees (for example, annual, per user or per training event) are actually substantially lower.
E-commerce
E-commerce is a new addition to LMS systems, which were originally only internal applications. The ability to assign a price, or even multiple prices to a course, track course enrollment, and manage all of the financial details of a learning transaction can now be found, fully integrated into some offerings.
Student interactions
Messaging technologies such as discussion groups and forums, blogs, instant messaging, RSS feeds, etc. are not, in themselves, new technologies. However, their integration inside web-based LMS systems only evolved in commercial LMS software recently. The ability for an enterprise to have multiple online courses, each course supported by its own, private, integrated discussion group or the ability to pose questions to an instructor or for a review team to comment on a certification exam during its development stage are all examples of direct applications for LMS software. These new technologies make for a much richer commercial or internal online training experience.
Learning media
Older systems were limited in the media which they could use. Newer offerings allow virtually any desktop PC media such as Flash video, Microsoft Office, narrated slide shows, PDF handouts and video to be used and embedded in web-delivered training. Current state-of-the-art systems even allow the learning media to be securely stored and hosted, thus illuminating the need and cost associated with local video storage. E-books, text documents, handouts, and all manner of learning background materials may be securely stored on modern LMS systems.
Test delivery
Dramatic improvements have been made in the last two years in quiz, test and survey delivery. Automatic quiz and test scoring is prevalent. However, the flexibility of selecting a list or a random selection of questions from one or more pools of questions is relatively new in LMS software. This ability reduces student collaboration or cheating when delivering online tests. Also, the newer LMS systems also have the ability to time questions and tests, another way to reduce cheating.
Conclusion
In short, the past year has seen a dramatic decrease in cost and a dramatic increase in functionality in the new generation of LMS software. Whether you are looking for, or already have learning system – now may be the time to find a significantly less expensive solution with even greater functionality.
