I was going to suggest Thomas the Engine and his crew, but it sounds like you are looking for a more adult train set. Little ones love Thomas.

Toys R Us has a neat one (table and all) for around $160. The Thomas one is nice also. I like the fact that you can add pieces later on.
ETA: I think this is the one I saw in the store and was referring to. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3140177
Ebay.
I like GeoTrax better than ebay, as I cant stand the Thomas Song, and didnt want my kids stuck on it.
I think the geotracks one would be good. We have thomas and I think it’s cheapy. My daughter likes it, I just don’t think it’s worth paying so much just for the “thomas” name.
My son loves his GeoTrax train. It is very sturdy he is 2 1/2 and he can put it together himself. It has so many add-ons. We started out with the Grand Central Station set. It is the main one. You can add new track and trains. Now they have and airplane track you can add to it. My son is getting that for Christmas this year. My husband enjoys playing with it too. If you search images on google of Geotrax trains you will be amazed at how big people go with these things.
Thomas the train, has some really good sets that you can build on to.
My daughter got her train stuck in her hair though.
Go Thomas the Tank Engine Take Along Sets. They aren’t overly expensive, but they are a fantastic set.
We did go to buy the wooden ones, made by Thomas the Tank Engine, but they simply aren’t worth the money. Get the cheaper brand wooden sets, that fit Thomas, they are still fantastic Quality.
We also bought a *Ride On Train Set* which was rather expensive, but worth every cent. It’s a year old, and all the kids play on it.
