Model Steam Trains and the Hobbyist

One of the things that I really enjoyed doing as a child, and continue to do so today is going to Disneyland. This amusement park captured my imagination as a young boy, and although I still find this wonderful land to be just as rewarding as an adult, my true pleasure is derived from observing the same excitement and joy my Grandchildren display each time I take them!

When Disneyland was in it’s planning stages, one of the first attractions Walt Disney decided on was a model steam train ride, and in fact, the first thing you see when entering Disneyland is a train station for that very ride. The idea for a model steam train ride carried over from his youth, when he built a true to life replica scale model railway in the rear outdoor area of his home that he called the “Carolwood Pacific Railroad”.

Walt Disney is really not much different than many of us who were drawn to model railroading and model steam trains as children. The only difference in us, and other people is that we’ve discovered as adults that this is a truly amazing hobby, and not unlike Disney, we decided from the onset of our involvement with this hobby, to build our layout around our model steam trains.

What makes the model steam train so unique is the fact that they come in varying sizes that can accommodate the most serious of collectors. They can be large enough to actually transport people, as is the case with the Disney ride and many other rides located around the country, or they can be just the right size to accommodate the model railroaders layout that has been set up in his home.

The attraction of the model steam train is rooted in the fact that this wonderful train represents an important historical time in the development of the United States, and continues to still function as a workhorse in our current railroad system. Not only do hobbyist pursue the model steam train for it’s high attention to detail, but also for it’s value as a collectible. It is a well known fact that collectors aggressively pursue this particular model scale, and will go to great lengths to acquire the pieces which they would like to add to their collections.

This video clip deals more with the streamliners. In this video are the Hiawatha, a British A3 Pacific, some Coronation type streamliners, the J3a Streamlined Hudson, the George H. Emerson, and the S1. There is a short clip from an Alfred Hitchcock movie on the A3 Pacific. The end of this video starts to go into mountain railroading. There also some clips from the 1939 Worlds Fair.
