This video series, hosted by Michael Gross, will teach you the simple how-to workshop techniques you need to know to take an HO scale electric train set and make it a scenic model railroad. Well show you how to build a 4×8 model train table (benchwork) from plywood, lay sections of track, create easy realistic scenery using foam and paint, assemble model buildings, and wire your layout with a DC power pack. When youre done, youll have a railroad that operates well and looks real. Our techniques would work in N, O, S, G, or Z scale also. Desperate for 2-rail O gauge model railroading in a smaller space? This video shows that you can modify Atlas O (or other brand) 3-rail track to build 2-rail layouts in a space normally occupied by 3-rail. The keys are 1) Insulate the freight car wheels, 2) Remove the center rail, and 3) Modify the switches. Please comment. I can provide details, and even modify a piece of track for you. Track here is O-36. MTH Premier engines made after 2005 will work (“Proto-Scale 3-2 convertible”). I hope to generate interest amongst modelers that will influence the manufacturers to move the hobby in this direction. The time has come for 2 rail O gauge layouts in a smaller space: 2 rail Hi-Rail!

  1. Thanks Southern – hopefully others will agree, and the pent up demand will become visible to toymakers.

  2. Thanks. I hope to get some momentum with this method. I think the pendulum swung too far with forcing people to go “scale” everything (wheels, couplers, track.) What’s needed is a halfway, hybrid solution that works in smaller spaces and with people’s existing rolling stock out there (with modifications).

  3. great tips dude!! good job!

  4. Great video thanks for the information.
