Question by freckles7724: best model train set to buy?
I am looking for a good model train set to buy as a gift for my 9 year old son. I would like to get something that he will carry into adulthood and can continue to add onto throughout the years. Any suggestions on what is the best brand/set to buy? and what is a good startup package? thanks

You can buy him any Kit at a hobby store I haven’t seen a descent set at a toy store for years. The are many different scale sizes to choose from “n” scale is the smallest you might want to get him. My first train was an “N” scale. This set is good if your tight on space. I recommend “HO” scale If you have enough space I think something about 4 or 5 x6 and that’s going around in circles. But he will always be able to change the track configuration. At 9 years old depending on the child because I was the type to break all my toys. If he later wants to you can help him build an actual layout like with mountians, grass, gravel..etc they sell Kits for that too but they do take some time. So look into it, you can go to www.towerhobbies.com. A good brand for a starter set is bachmann you can visit their website at www.bachmanntrains.com and I almost forgot I reccomend getting a bachmann catalog if I’m not mistaking those are usefull and entertainning to look at.
